Bring materials for your group presentation

You can bring anything with your group that you would like to create your group presentation about the Sun, Moon and Earth. Some ideas are: recyclable items, clay, 3D objects, foam balls of different sizes, markers, colored pencils, construction paper. There is poster board you can use at school. Other materials must be brought from home if you want to add more creative ideas to your presentation.

The oral presentation will be on Friday. You will need to explain the answers you found to each question in words and/or pictures for your presentation. You can use both words and pictures to better explain your answers.

In class tomorrow you will create a visual aide with your group and shows information about the Sun, Moon and Stars. To practice for your presentation, at home you can put the answers in your own words (the answers that you found in books or on the internet), by reading aloud to your family and friends.

Throughout this school year we have completed evaluations to test the students knowledge of the content they are learning. Therefore, in second grade we do not feel it is necessary to ask the students to recall such a large amount of information for a year-long cumulative test in each subject. Below you will find a list of when each unit test or project will be next week. This schedule will allow the students to know what they should be working on at home over the long weekend and how they can prepare for each test.

A lo largo de este año escolar hemos completado evaluaciones para mirar el conocimiento de los contenidos que los estudiantes estan aprendiendo. Por lo tanto, en segundo grado no sentimos que sea necesario pedirle a los estudiantes que memoricen una gran cantidad de información para una evaluación acumulativa en cada materia. A continuación encontrarán la información sobre las fechas en las que se realizaran evaluaciones o proyectos la próxima semana. This test will be about the 7 continents and 4 oceans of the world. You will need to bring a 16cm foam ball to school on this day. In class you will place each continent on the "globe" and label the oceans.

With our VYDA Moms we have been learning about friendship and accepting others. We chose different partners in the class and wrote notes to them about why we like them. We shared these ideas in class today.

Complete the worksheet by thinking about different periods of time. How long will it take you to complete each activity? Think about how much time it would take you.

Picture with Shapes

Draw a picture using only shapes. Count how many shapes the drawing on the top of the paper has and write how many of each there are. At the bottom of the page you can count the number of each shape you use in your picture. To draw the picture you must use a ruler or the shapes that you borrowed from Miss Jill.

Review the test with Mom and Dad. Talk about the things you did well and the things you did not understand. You all had the opportuinty to ask questions of Miss Jill today in class about why a problem was incorrect. Therefore, if Mom or Dad have questions, you should be able to tell them what the mistake was and how you could have done it correctly.

If you received 69% or lower you will be taking another test with Miss Jill within the next week. If you are one of those students, you need to study and practice before your "recuperation" date with Miss Jill.

Notebook Work

Today in class we completed a "Study Guide" that will help you prepare for the test. There were many questions we answered together about how to tell time to the different parts of an hour. Review this work tonight to help you practice for the test.

Telling Time Test Tomorrow

Use your notebook and past worksheets to prepare for the telling time test. Another way to practice is to read the clock throughout the night and tell Mom or Dad the real time that the clock shows. For the test you will be asked to read a face clock and also draw the minute and hour hand to show the correct time. The topics that we covered in class today were:

1. How much is a minute? What can you do in less than a minute? Fill in your list of 5 ideas about what you can do.
2. Telling Time to the Hour

3. Telling Time to the Half-Hour

4. Telling Time to the Quarter-Hour

5. Telling Time to the Five Minutes

6. Telling Time to the Minute

IMPORTANT!! When you are showing a time on a face clock, start at the hour you are looking for and then move the minute hand to the minute. This will help you know exactly where the hour hand will be when you draw the hands on the clock.

Otra forma de practicar el leyendo el reloj durante la noche y diciendole a mamá o papá la hora real que el reloj muestra. We are beginning to write the first (rough) draft of our stories for the Writing Assessment. We will continue our work with this throughout next week. This is an in-class project that will give a good idea about how the English level of our student´s writing is progressing through second grade. At the end of the school year we will have a chance to compare our writing from the first trimester to now and see how much we have learned about writing in English throughout this school year.

Boys and Girls,

At this time in the trimester we do not have very many assignment and projects for Science and Social Studies. Therefore, many of you who are missing only one or two things are currently failing one or both of these subjects. Please know that we will be having many more assignments and opportunities for you to improve your grade in Science and Social Studies throughout the rest of the school year. However, you also have to know that a large part of your Social Studies grade is based on your responsibility for your homework and daily responsibilities in class

We will be completing a Social Studies project soon, at which time you will have an opportunity to raise your grade. It is your responsibility to make the effort to improve this grade in either Social Studies or Science, or both. I know you can do it!

Language Activity Tips

For Parents

Here are some tips for everyday activities for you to do with your child that will support his or her success in language.

· Play guessing games – “I’m thinking of …” or “In my bag I have a …” – and take turns with your child trying to discover the answers. Be sure to give simple clues and ask probing questions.

· Involve your child in conversation and discussion, taking turns listening and talking.

· Ask your child to tell family members or friends about what you did at the park or saw on your drive to school. Encourage your child to recall and describe details.

· Sing songs and read poems and rhyming books together. Emphasize the sounds and rhythm of the words.

· Make a list or card file of words your child can read. Add to it as he learns a new Word and point out that the list or file is increasing.

· Encourage your child to make and send letters, thank you notes, and greeting cards to friends and relatives. Have a special place for paper, glue, stickers and other materials.

· Use books as resources with your child when he has a question you can’t answer: “Let’s see if we can find an answer to that question.”

· While waiting in the doctor’s office or in a line at the store, keep your child occupied by asking questions about the surroundings: “Can you find something that starts with the ‘B’ sound?

· Have your child read menus, roadside signs, game directions, weather reports, movie time listings, and other practical everyday information. It does not matter if it is in Spanish, because talking, reading, and playing in Spanish will make children feel comfortable when doing the same in English.

· Make sure they always have something to read in their spare time when they could be waiting for appointments or riding in a car.

Estas son algunas ideas para realizar actividades diarias con su hijo(a), que le ayudará a tener éxito con el aprendizaje del idioma.

We will continue our school-wide Book Fair in the library this next week. You can send money with your children or come to the school and choose great books in Spanish and English. Literacy Night TONIGHT!!!

Our night of fun will START at 6:00 tonight. Please arrive at the Coliseum at 5:50. We have so many fun things plannned for you and your family! See you there.

Family Retreat TOMORROW!

Our FAMILY Retreat is tomorrow morning at 7:15. Please arrive with your Mom and/or Dad to San Pablo de la Cruz at 7:15 in the morning. You DO NOT need to come to school before this. After the retreat activities the students will return to school with Miss Jill and Miss Luza for lunch and to finish the normal school day.

If you are NOT planning on attending our Family Retreat tomorrow you MUST come to school at the normal time, 6:50.

Buy Books @ School Tomorrow!

You can send money to school tomorrow after the retreat to buy books from the Book Fair. Tomorrow we have special access to the books Miss Jill chose just for our class. After tomorrow the Book Fair will continue in the library. There will be more books in the library that the students can choose from to buy.

The books that we have in our classroom now are the ones that are GREAT for second grade students and are wonderful books!

The book prices are as follows: $13,000; $16,000; $22,000.

We have books of all three prices in or class. We hope you share as much excitement as the teachers and students about these books! This is a great opportunity to purchase great books in English for your child. Parents are also welcome to come to the Book fair starting on Monday to choose books for your children.

Use a clock to help you time how much time has elapsed. For one side of your worksheet you shold use the big clock in your notebook to skip-count by 5´s. (The clock we wrote on yesterday that is titled: Telling Time to the Minute.)

15 minutes has gone by.
When you need to find out what the new time is you can ADD the amount of minutes to the first time to find the answer.
For example: It is 4:05. I take a bath for 20 minutes. What time is it when I am done taking my bath?
4:05 + 20 minutes = 4:25, because :05 + :20 = :25
It is 4:25 when I am done taking my bath.

Usa el reloj para saber cuanto tiempo ha pasado. Para una cara de tu guia debes usar el reloj grande en tu cuaderno para contar de a 5 en 5. ( en el reloj que escribimos ayer que esta titulado: Telling Time to the Minute)

Por ejemplo: son las 3:00 después de que me baño los dientes son las 3:15. Cuanto tiempo ha pasado?

Cuenta de a 5 en 5 en el reloj para encontrar la respuesta

3:00-3:05 (5)
3:05-3:10 (10)
3:10-3:15 (15)

han pasado 15 minutos.
Cuando necesites saber la nueva hora puedes SUMAR la cantidad de minutos a la primera hora para encontrar la respuesta.
Por ejemplo: son las 4:05. Me baño por 20 minutos. Que hora es cuando termine de bañarme?

4:05 + 20 minutos = 4:25, porque :05 + :20 = :25s

son las 4:25 cuando termine de bañarme.

Bring Literacy Night props on Monday!

Yesterday all of the students received a letter telling them what prop they will need to create and bring for our Literacy Night. Those students who did not receive this letter are acting in the play and are responsible for creating their costume. If you have any questions please ask them sooner than later! We would like these things here at school this Monday so we can practice with all of the props on the stage.

We are all very excited about our Literacy Night and hope you can all attend with your family! The events will begin at 6:00 and last until 8:00 in the coliseum.

Workers' Day-Friday, April 30th

Please bring your $3000 donation for our Workers' Day celebration on Friday, April 30th. This is a very important day in our Colegio Panamericano community! There are many people who work "behind the scenes" everyday to keep our school clean and safe. These people deserve our praise and recognition.

THE WUMP WORLD

The Wump World was a small world, very much smaller than our world. There
were no great oceans, lofty mountains, giant forests, or broad sandy deserts.
The Wump World was mostly grassy meadows and clumps of leafy green
trees with a few winding rivers and lakes. But it was perfect for the Wumps,
who were the only creatures living there.

The Wumps were simple grass-eaters and spent most of their time
grazing on the tall tender grass that grew in the meadows. In warm
weather they cooled themselves in the crystal-clear rivers and
lakes. And at night they slept in the shelter of the bumbershoot
trees to keep the dew off their backs.

Since the Wumps had no enemies they wandered around just as
they pleased with nothing whatever to worry about. However, the
Wumps would have worried if they had known that someone a
million miles away was watching their little world.
One morning the Wumps were awakened by a far-off
humming sound. It seemed to be coming from
somewhere above, and as the humming grew into a
heavy roar, the sleepy-eyed Wumps crept through the
trees for a peek at the sky.

Zooming straight for the earth came a great flock of
potbellied monsters, with tails and fins, spitting fire and
shooting out streaks of black smoke.
As the monsters swooped down to land, huge legs
sprang from their bulging sides, and like gaping mouths
doors flew open, then ramps shot to the ground. And
down the ramps came a horde of tiny creatures
swarming out onto the meadow.

These were the Pollutians from the planet Pollutus.
They had left their worn-out old planet to start a new life
in a new world. After such a long journey the Pollutians
were overjoyed to find themselves on solid ground once
more

They were all prattling with excitement as they
followed their leader, the topmost Pollutian and
World Chief, across the meadow. At the top of a
hill the chief stopped for a long look at the
surrounding countryside.

Finally he said, “Looks good. We’ll take it. Plant
the flag, sergeant, and let’s get things going!”
One shrill trumpet blast brought giant machines
thundering out of the yawning spaceships, rolling
down runways and out onto the meadow. The timid
Wumps had been watching warily from the shelter of
the trees, and at the sight of the giant machines they
were horrified.

”Wump! wump!” they cried, and in a
wild-eyed panic they went humpityclumping
off through the trees to go
diving headlong into the nearest cave.
Then down they tumbled head over heels
through a twisting tunnel to end up
huddled together in dark caverns, while the
earth-shaking machines rumbled and
roared high above.

Once they got started, the monstrous machines moved at a furious pace, gobbling up trees
and grinding them to bits.

More giant machines flattened the ground, followed by great scoopers and scrapers and
diggers and gigantic cranes. Soon the entire Wump World was overrun.
The busy little Pollutians kept their mighty machines going full blast day and night without letup, in a frenzy to improve their wonderful new world.

Suddenly great cities sprang up. Huge factory buildings with towering smokestacks, high-rise
apartment buildings and tall tall office buildings, and above them all loomed the hundred-story
skyscrapers.

Along with the buildings came a tangle of streets and freeways with on ramps and off
ramps, overpasses and underpasses, jammed with trucks and buses and cars of all sizes
rushing pell-mell in every direction.

It was one great turmoil of noise and confusion and there was still more to come.
Meanwhile the poor Wumps remained underground wandering aimlessly through the
caverns feeding on the fuzzy green moss growing on the ledges and the mushrooms
clustered in the crannies, and sipping the sweet water from pools fed by underground
springs. But they were very unhappy. For all they knew, they might have to spend the
rest of their days down there.

The Wumps didn’t dare venture up to the surface, not even for a peek. They were
much too frightened by the endless rumblings and roarings and loud screechings
coming from above. And it was growing noisier by the day.

There was more and more noise and more of everything. More buildings with more
smokestacks puffing more and more smoke.

More freeways with more traffic shooting out moi’e and more clouds of exhaust. More trash
and more trash piles, with more and more waste gushing into the rivers and lakes.
Pretty soon the cities were so clouded by the factory smoke and the fumes from the freeways the Pollutians could barely breathe.

They went sneezing and wheezing about the streets grouching and grumbling and blaming one
another for the awful mess they were in

One day an angry crowd gathered outside the World Tower building demanding to see the World
Chief. When the chief appeared on his balcony all the Pollutians began shouting at once. “We can’t breathe the air! We can’t drink the water! And we can’t stand the noise! We’ve had enough!”

“Ah-ah-ker-choo!” sneezed the chief. “I know just
how you feel. And something will be done at once.
I promise.”

With no time to lose the chief called for a meeting with his three top outerspacemen.
“Gentlemen,” he said, “this world of ours has gone sour. We’ve got to get out
of here quick. But first we must find a new world. A better one. That’s your
“Righto, chief!” barked the men, and within fifteen minutes they were at the
spaceport aboard their spaceships. Then Zer-r-roosh! Zer-r-roosh! Zer-rroosh!
the men took off in three directions, and in seconds they were
zooming about in outer space at seven thousand miles an hour.

Days passed with no word from the outer-spacemen. After waiting a week the
World Chief flew into a rage, “Blast it all,” he bellowed, “what’s keeping those
blithering bubble heads?”

Then one Monday morning, out of the dark smudgy sky swooshed one of the
spaceships.

As the ship touched down, the man hopped out shouting, “I’ve done it! I’ve
done it! I’ve found a new world! A bigger and better world!”

“Nice going, lad!” cried the World Chief, and the crowd gathered at the spaceport
gave their hero one great rousing cheer which ended in a fit of sneezing.
In no time the great news was sent flashing around the world over radio and TV
warning all Pollutians to be packed and ready to go within twenty-four hours.
At dawn the next day the entire population swarmed into the space center and
crowded aboard the giant spaceships.

After double-checking to make sure all Pollutians were accounted for the World
Chief gave the signal for blastoff. With a thunderous roar the giant ships shot off
the ground Ka-Zoom! up and away through the smoke-blackened sky and were
gone. And at long last peace and quiet settled over the Wump World.
The sudden silence came as a shock to the Wumps. They could hardly believe
their ears. Still, they wanted to take no chances and so they remained in their
caverns with ears cocked for the slightest sound.

After a long long silence they decided it was time to go, and, led by the biggest
Wump, they crept up the tunnel to the cave entrance to find it covered by a
crust of cement. With one powerful push of his snout the biggest Wump
bumped his way through.

Then one by one the Wumps waddled out onto a freeway and gaped in wideeyed
amazement. They had feared something awful was happening to their
world, but this was much more than they could have imagined.
They were staggered by the size of the huge buildings with walls and walls of
windows looming up on every side, and the broad layers of hard, fiat crust
covering the earth which felt strangely cold to their feet. There was no sign of
any tree or tuft of grass. Even the sky was gone. And the Wumps wondered if
there was anything left for them. At least they must find out.

They wandered the freeways for miles only to find more and more buildings with
endless heaps of wreckage and rubble. For all they could see their world was
completely ruined. Footsore and weary, the Wumps were about to give up and
head back for their cave when the biggest Wump let out a joyful “Wump!”

Just ahead of them was a grassy meadow with a clump of bumbershoot trees, all that
was left of their lovely world. “Wump-wumping” for joy, the Wumps went bounding off
the freeway out onto the meadow. Pretty soon the hungry Wumps were munching away
on the tall tender grass. Now there was new hope for the Wumps.

In time the murky skies would clear up and the rains would wash the scum from the
rivers and lakes. The tall buildings would come tumbling down and the freeways would
crumble away. And in time the green growth would wind its way up through the rubble.

Today we are continuing to work on subtracting with regrouping. Today we subtracting with two 2-digit numbers, for example: 31-12. Show your work by completing a workmat and number problem with regrouping if you need to, in your notebook for each problem on the "story problems" side of the worksheet. Remember to subtract in the tens and the ones columns when you are drawing and crossing out your pictures.

We will be visiting another school (8:00-10:30) to get to know others in our community and to celebrate the differences between us. The school we will be visiting has children that are not as fortunate as we are, therefore we will be learning about the things they learn, the ways they learn, and seeing school from a different perspective. We have been talking about respect and tolerance in second grade this year, so we would like to use this opportunity for our students to apply all of the things they have learned about RESPECT and TOLERANCE in this new environment, with people who are different than them.

I would like to let you all know about some things that are happening at school, during lunch time. Today at school, after the students left the lunch table I found chicken, meat and rice all over the floor. It was clear that this was from our students because we are the first ones in the lunch room everyday. I was very dissappointed to see that our students are reverting to this behavior to avoid eating at lunch. We talked about what happened after lunch and about the ways we eat at home. I am assuming that your children are not throwing food on the floor at home and therefore should not be doing this at school. I would appreciate it if you would talk with your child about this incident to ensure that this does not happen again. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

To practice for your One-Minute Math you can visit one of the Math websites listed on last Friday´s homework posting. Use these games to practice and learn all of your addition and subtraction math facts.

Regrouping

Complete the worksheet by showing your work for each problem in your Math notebook. You need to draw a picture (by drawing a workmat for each one) and solve the problem in your notebook. Then you need to answer the questions on the worksheet for each question to complete your work. There are 12 problems that you should write in your notebook.

Count On: Tens and Ones

Show your work by finding the important words that tell you to add and solving the problems by couting on by tens or ones. For #4 and #5 on the problem sovling side, draw a number line to show your work and show if you counted on by 1´s or 10´s. Show your regrouping when you need to.

Contar hacia adelante unidades o decenas

Muestra tu trabajo encontrando las palabras importantes que te dicen que debes sumar y resolviendo los problemas contando hacía adelante de a 10 en 10 o de uno en uno. Para los #4 y #5 en la parte de solución de problemas, Dibuja una linea numérica para mostrar tu trabajo y mostrar si contaste de 1 en 1 o de 10 en 10. Muestra que reagrupaste cuando tengas necesidad de hacerlo.
